Introducing the Ohio Film Office Lieutenant Governor Lee Fisher, who also serves as Director of the Ohio Department of Development, today announced the opening of the Ohio Film Office, which will be housed within the Ohio Department of Development's Division of Travel and Tourism. The opening coincides with the hiring of Christina Grozik, who begins work today as Ohio Film Office Director. About the Ohio Film Office Columbus Film Company signs Distribution Deal Cinema Lexzikon signs with York Entertainment for distribution of Code Black Cinema Lexzikon, LLC, a Columbus based independent film company has announced that it has reached a deal for the world wide distribution of its feature film, CODE BLACK with York Entertainment of Los Angeles, California Filmed entirely in Columbus, Ohio by African-American filmmaker, William Lee, CODE BLACK is more than an ordinary urban gang film. While the film begins with scenes typical of an inner city drama, the cinematic vision of its director causes the story to take a sudden, sharp left turn into uncharted cinematic territory for the gangsta movie genre. The result is a spine jarring, thought provoking, film that stands out from the pack. The story concerns Maketti Riggs (played by Sylvester Person) a hardened street thug, who is in direct competition with his mentor Antonio Remy (William Lee). As the film starts, a bloody turf war is taking place between two ideologies of the hood: the twentieth first century hip hop "gangsta", versus the "O.G." or "Old gangster" mentality. It's young blood against the old school. Just as viewers settle into the notion that this is another "gang-banger's delight", CODE BLACK jolts the audience with a controversial plot line: What if the government came up with a genocide strategy to end all drug gangs, and then "dispose" of the remnants? A really good film plot or possibly the future of the urban population of this country? CODE BLACK maintains all the familiar high-action, fist flying, feet kicking, excessive gunplay of a William Lee film, but underlying all the "show" is a film with substance. As Lee comments, "While I don't want CODE BLACK to be heavy handed, brow beating bulls@!**, I do want people of all ethnicities to come away with more than just a 'good time at the movies'. When CODE BLACK hits the streets, I want people to think to themselves 'IS this really going to happen?' In short, I want people to enjoy the film, but carry some of what they have seen into their lives. I'm hoping it will succeed on both levels." York Entertainment is one of the biggest video distributors in the world distributing film to every major DVD retailer, including Blockbuster, Hollywood Video, Wal Mart, Virgin record Stores, Tower Records, Columbia House DVD club as well as cable, TV and other ancillary markets internationally. The world wide DVD release for CODE BLACK is April 22, 2008. For more information, and to view the film's trailer, visit the website: www.yorkentertainment.com or www.cinemalexzikon.com.

Don't miss this once-in-a-decade event! OHIO PRODUCTION INDUSTRY GETS A BOOST OHIO PRODUCTION INDUSTRY COALITION NEWS RELEASE Contact: Mark Krausz Tucked away in Ohio's new $52.3 billion operating budget is a provision that can significantly elevate Ohio's national profile in digital production and entertainment-related programming. The provision, originally sponsored by Sen. Patricia Clancy R-Cincinnati and widely supported by both political parties and signed into law by Governor Strickland, provides for a comprehensive statewide study of Ohio's sound, video and film production industry, the creation of a Media Production Advisory Board and a state film office. "The General Assembly saw ample evidence that Ohio can have a starring role in digital content, gaming, in-store and commercial production. To make it happen, we need to connect the dots and exploit emerging opportunity sectors," said Clancy. Clancy emphasized the importance of education in building production and cites the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) as a model for how digital content production can be a powerful catalyst for business and economic development. According to Clancy, "Texas recognized four years ago that that the real future is in building a critical mass, a production talent pool, accessible to the state's existing employer base that can serve as a powerful competitive magnet for innovators and investors. The Texas program has reaped millions of dollars in research and collaborative project dollars with everything from the defense department to global corporations." The advisory board, study and film office will be under the Department Of Development headed by Lt. Governor Lee Fisher. Members of the state's video production industry and entertainment unions hailed the measure because it challenges labor, business, academia and government to create a fact-based "business plan" with the film office configured to help execute the plan. Jeff Scheiman, CEO of SOS Video Communications in Columbus said that, "Hollywood is just one driver of production activities. Innovative corporations including ones in Ohio and those looking to relocate here are also hiring production service firms, animators, digital sound designers, game developers and creators of online digital content. These corporations must be assured that there is a critical mass of production talent and facilities in Ohio." According to Ken Mills, President of Columbus-based Mills James Productions, "It just makes more sense this way. A key component for economic development and a competitive business environment is being able to create compelling content for the exploding number of little screens – not just the big screen". Marcia Owen, COO at EDR Media's Beachwood Studios Production Center in Cleveland stated that, "In business you always lead with your strengths. This measure will enable us to identify our state's competitive strengths, identify areas that need improvement and attract more production work to Ohio." Denise Dal Vera, President of the Tri-State union local of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) agrees. "Labor has to be even more pro-active in developing our skills to meet the creative demands of the competitive marketplace. The Clancy measure makes us all partners in helping to create good sustainable production jobs in Ohio. There are two other production related measures awaiting hearings in the General Assembly. Senate Bill 52, sponsored by Clancy and House Bill 196 sponsored by Tom Patton R-Cleveland offer tax incentives for production but differ widely in how those incentives would apply. Dan Keckan, Vice President of Cinecraft Productions in Cleveland believes that, "The fate of any incentives will hinge largely on the findings of the industry study." "This is a very complex business," he adds, "What works for New York or Louisiana may not be the best approach for Ohio." In response to rumors that the Cleveland and Cincinnati Film Commissions were apathetic or hostile towards the creation of the statewide film office and study, Mark Krausz, who shepherded the industry side of the effort said, "The Cleveland and Cincinnati Commissions, perhaps rightly, view their mission through a narrower lens. When the state eliminated funding for its film office a few years ago, Cleveland, and Cincinnati - Columbus, too - stepped up to the plate." "But," he added, "Governor Strickland and both parties in the legislature have now given us the means to all work together for the entire state to realize its full production potential." Central Ohio Filmmakers "On The Lot" A number of Central Ohio filmmakers have uploaded their films onto the web site the upcoming FOX Television program "On The Lot". Part "The Apprentice" and part "American Idol", "On The Lot" is a new reality series set to feature 16 undiscovered filmmakers who will complete each week for viewer support and votes. The winner will earn a $1-million development deal with DreamWorks. Central Ohio films and filmmakers that may be found "On The Lot" include... Cleveland Filmmaker Partners With PBS to Premier Movie
Cleveland filmmaker, Adam White, won a regional Emmy in 2005 for his one-hour documentary, "The Restorers." Now, paired with PBS 45/49, he has completed his second film, "Redtail Reborn," which will have its television premier on February 11, 2007 during African American history month. Narrated by television star, Michael Dorn, the movie details both the heroic tale of the Tuskegee Airmen, and of a dedicated man who died trying to tell their story. The Tuskegee Airmen were the first and only African American pilots of their time. The documentary chronicles the history of the group as they are segregated from white squadrons, and originally told that "black men are cowards," and "not only lacked the mental capacity to command, but courage, as well." Despite America's racism of the era, these men then went on to fight in WWII, garnishing one of the most impressive combat records in American history. Unfortunately, very few people know about the Airmen's story, and so the film goes on to investigate the Redtail Project, a group of people determined to educate America about a forgotten part of its history. While touring the country with a restored P-51 Mustang fighter plane painted in homage to the Tuskegee Airmen, the airplane malfunctions during an air show demonstration and ends in tragedy, killing the pilot and destroying the aircraft. Now the Redtail Project fights to rebuild the plane, both for the Tuskegee Airmen and for their departed friend. Locally produced by Cleveland-based production company, Hemlock Films, the documentary's crew is comprised completely of freelancers who make a living working in the Ohio film community. PBS has planned a public premier for the movie on February 11, 2007 and will feature the film on the cover of its publication, The Alternative.
